What’s new this month
Hello travellers!
Hello from Colombo where I’ve just rounded off an amazing 2 weeks in Sri Lanka.
Despite spending so much time travelling around Asia the last few years, this is my first time being back in the sub continent since 2015 when I visited India.
I didn’t particularly love that part of my trip so I was a little bit hesitant coming back but I immediately realised that Sri Lanka is nothing like India.
I came to Sri Lanka to watch cricket as England were playing six matches out here. I had tickets to 5 of them and we won all 5! Talk about being a good omen 😜

I took in two matches in Colombo and then travelled to Kandy in the centre of the country for another three. It was an incredible experience, met some amazing people at the grounds and another sport ticked off my list.
Colombo is a busy city but it still felt organised. The constant horns of tuk tuks radiated the air but I could still escape to some of the parks and quiet corners when it felt too much.
I then spent a few days in Kandy and explored the city there, wandering around the lake, going to see the Buddhas tooth and enjoying the amazing views from where I was staying in the hills.
It’s a nice city but not one I would rush back to in a hurry. It’s pleasant, and there are some nice things to do there, but most of the fun is around the outside, taking day trips to tea plantations, waterfalls and maybe even as far as Sigiriya Rock.
Unfortunately, time wasn’t on my side so it just means I’ll have to return another day…
Topic of the month
I’ll have more post up soon but here are some of the posts I’ve already written about Sri Lanka….
Deal of the month
On this trip, I’ve gone back to travelling with just hand luggage. It has just been my and my trusty 40L backpack that has been to more countries than most people.
It’s been nice to have the freedom of just throwing the one bag on my bag and getting on with it. It’s easy to get on and off of buses with and easily fits in the overhead bin on flights.
If you have never travelled with just a carry on, I highly recommend you consider it at least once, it makes travelling so much easier!
I’ve used this bag for about 5 years now and won’t be changing any time soon.

The companies I use:
🏨For the widest range of accommodation, I use Booking.com to book my hotels, hostels and guesthouses.
🎒This is the backpack I use that has taken me all over the world.
📶Get data on the go with an eSIM from Airalo.
🏥For travel insurance, I use Safety Wing. Get $20 off your first policy with this link.
🚙Renting a car when travelling? Find the best options with DiscoverCars.
🚶🏻♂️Want more in depth info on the road? Join a tour run by locals with GetYourGuide.
✈️Relax before you set off with hundreds of airport lounges worldwide with Priority Pass.
💲I use Wise to send money abroad. Really easy and a lot cheaper than the bank! Give it a try with a fee-free transfer of up to 500 GBP.
Keep travelling and look forward to next month when II’ll have more travel updates for you.
Safe travels,
Dan
